City Councilmember Email Postings

On April 21, 2009 with 24-hour notice, the City Attorney delivered to the City Council more than 400,000 emails comprising over 2 million pages. The Council is reviewing the emails for privileged and confidential information of the Council and the public.

Due to the email volume and the format of delivery by the City Attorney to the City Council, three phases of review were required: a technology expert, the Council's Special Counsel, and Councilmember/Council staff.

The technology expert, with assistance from Special Counsel, has developed a rolling system to separate and catalog the emails and to remove computer viruses. Using word searches and manual review, Special Counsel is reviewing the emails for privileged and confidential information. And, with assistance from the technology expert and Special Counsel, Councilmembers and members of their staffs are reviewing the emails for privileged and confidential constituent information protected under the state's public records law.

Utilizing the three phase process, the Council expects to update the website every few days until the more than 400,000 emails have been examined and posted in accordance with the state’s public records law.
