Biography

Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer is a leading advocate for the revitalization of New Orleans by investing in all of its culturally diverse neighborhoods.  The daughter of a former federal prosecutor and a school teacher, as well as the second of eight children, Kristin learned the values of sharing, cooperation and integrity at a very early age.   As the mother of three daughters, she recognizes the importance of safe streets and healthy communities.

Councilmember Gisleson Palmer is the former Executive Director of Rebuilding Together New Orleans, where she assisted numerous elderly, disabled, and low-income residents return to their homes post-Katrina.  She also founded Confetti Kids, a non-profit that improves the quality of life of the children of Algiers Point through the renovation of parks and playgrounds and is a founding board member of Evacuteer.org.

In the City Council, Councilmember Gisleson Palmer is chair of the Transportation, Sanitation and Environmental, and Disaster and Recovery committees.  Her top initiatives include regionalism within the transportation sector, expansion of streetcar lines, and increasing the number of bike paths throughout the City.  She is a strong advocate for improving the quality of life of all residents and has been a champion for the promotion of tourism, especially New Orleans’ unique cultural economy.  She is also a board member of the Algiers Development District, the French Market Corporation, the Upper Pontalba Building Restoration Corporation, the Canal Street Development Corporation, the Rivergate Development Corporation, the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation and the New Orleans Building Corporation.

Councilmember Gisleson Palmer is currently a Rodel Fellow of the Aspen Institute, a competitive two-year national fellowship for elected officials at all levels and was selected as a NewDEAL Leader, a recently launched national network committed to highlighting pro-growth progressive state and local elected leaders and their innovative ideas from across the country.  She is also an alumnus of the New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute, a local program that promotes regionalism and provides emerging leaders with a thorough understanding of community operations.  She has been honored with many accolades, including an award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2009, the CityBusiness Women of the Year Award in 2007, an award from the Historic District Landmarks Commission in 2000 and the Mayor’s Golden Hammer Award in 1997.  She is a graduate of Ursuline Academy and St. Louis University and currently resides in Algiers Point with her husband, Bobby Palmer, and her three daughters.
