Biography
Jon D. Johnson was elected District "E" Councilmember in March 2010. Johnson earned a Bachelors Degree in Economics and Finance from Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Loyola University and is a graduate of the Harvard School of State and Local Government.
Johnson is the first African American in the history of New Orleans to serve as a State Representative and State Senator, and the only African American in the history of Louisiana to serve as chairman of the Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee.
His legislative leadership paved the way for new jobs and businesses including bringing Pick N' Save, Jazzland Theme Park and the National Finance Center to New Orleans. He expanded the New Orleans Business and Industrial District, helped to triple the size of the SUNO campus, and secured $30 million to build the Technology and Research Park at University of New Orleans (UNO). Johnson also helped to secure $31 million to expand the Morial Convention Center and to pass the $215 million sports development package to recruit the Hornets and keep the Saints and Zephyrs in New Orleans.
As a result of Johnson's outstanding legislative leadership, he has been acknowledged on the regional and national level. He received recognition as Legislator of the Year by the following organizations: Alliance for Good Government, the Louisiana Association of Educators, Victims and Citizens Against Crime, and the Louisiana Municipal Association. He is also the recipient of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Martin Luther King Legislative Award.
Johnson is married to Dr. Angela Barthé and they have a five-year old daughter, Hannah. He serves as a Eucharistic Minister and usher at St. Maria Goretti Church and is a member of St. David's Church, located in District "E."
