New Orleans, LA - March 8, 2010 - In the next few weeks, the City Council, in coordination with the City Planning Commission, will hold public meetings in each Council District in an effort to inform and engage the public on the Master Plan.
Council President Arnie Fielkow requested that the Council's Recovery Committee take the lead on coordinating these District meetings and emphasized the importance of outreach to the community. Fielkow said, "As elected officials, it is our duty to consider the needs of our citizens when making legislative decisions, and we want to ensure that the public has the opportunity to inform themselves, ask questions and offer input before the Master Plan moves forward."
Recovery Committee Co-Chair Councilmember Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson, who authored the charter change that gives the Master Plan the force of law, said, "This Master Plan is critical to our city's recovery. It will bring badly needed stability to our planning process, protecting residential integrity and encouraging investment in our city. We need our residents' input to make sure we get this plan right."
Recovery Committee Co-Chair Councilmember Cynthia Willard-Lewis said, "Our citizens, community groups and neighborhood organizations always make concerted efforts to get engaged and make their voices heard on issues affecting the City. This item is no different - we recognize the desire of the public to be a part of the Master Plan approval and implementation processes, and we look forward to working together during these meetings."
